Saint Birgitta worked for peace and reconciliation in Europe and founded the Bridgettine Order. She had great care for the poor, and her spiritual revelations have had a significant impact on Christianity. After her death, pilgrims have journeyed to the Monastery Church in Vadstena, where her relics are preserved.
1303 Birgitta is born in Uppland and grows up at Ulvåsa in Östergötland.
1316 She marries Ulf Gudmarsson and becomes the mother of eight children.
1339 Birgitta and Ulf pilgrimages to Nidaros.
1341 Birgitta and Ulf pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela.
1342 Birgitta and Ulf settle at Alvastra Abbey.
1348 Birgitta attempts to mediate peace in the Hundred Years' War and persuade the Pope to move to Rome.
1349 Birgitta travels to Rome.
1370 The Pope approves Birgittas's monastic rule.
1372 Birgitta embarks on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
1373 Birgitta dies on July 23 in Rome. Her remains are returned to Sweden by her children, Katarina and Birger.
1374 On July 4, Birgittas's remains are enshrined.
1384 The monastery in Vadstena is consecrated.
1391 On October 7, Birgitta is canonized.
1396 She is declared the patron saint of Sweden.
1430 The Monastery Church in Vadstena is consecrated.
1999 Pope John Paul II designates Saint Birgitta as one of Europe's three female patron saints.
