St. Birgitta Ways is open to everyone who wishes to make a pilgrimage to or from Vadstena, regardless of background or motivation. The routes vary from steep wilderness trails through deep forests to winding gravel roads across diverse open landscapes. Almost every day's stage passes different forms of water, inviting you to take a swim or simply pause and rest. Several times a day, you can step into a cool church, experience its peace and the echoes of history, and perhaps feel that you are part of something greater.

Order your pilgrim passport

The pilgrim passport is a unique companion for anyone walking a pilgrimage route. In the past, it served as an official document granting permission to travel. Today, it is still issued by the Bishop of the Diocese of Linköping and connects you to a centuries-old pilgrimage tradition.

As pilgrims have done for generations, you collect stamps along the way, creating a personal record of your journey. The passport also gives access to special offers and experiences along the route, including discounts and pilgrim-only opportunities. For many, it becomes a treasured keepsake and reminder of the journey.

When you arrive in Vadstena and can show that you have walked at least 100 km on pilgrimage routes (not necessarily in one continuous journey), you are eligible to receive a pilgrim certificate.

Similar pilgrim passports are used on major pilgrimage routes and at pilgrimage destinations throughout Europe. As a pilgrim, you are invited to become part of something greater.

The pilgrim passport is available from Vadstena Pilgrimage Centre and costs SEK 50. To order one, please contact us by email. Passports can also be purchased at our starting points in Söderköping, Linköping and Vårdnäs.
