To and from the trail

Where does the trail start and how do you get there? A pilgrimage can technically begin anywhere. However, for those who wish to walk the St. Birgitta Ways, we have several suggestions for good starting points that are easily accessible by train or local public transport.

VADSTENA

To and from Vadstena, you can use Östgötatrafiken.

SOUTH

Hamburg (Germany)

In Hamburg, you start your walk from Hauptkirche St. Jacobi, located about 500 meters from Hamburg Hbf train station. The easiest way to get there is by train. Book your ticket via SJ.se.

Maribo (Denmark)

The Pilgrim House in Maribo is a meeting place for pilgrims and a great starting point for your journey. You can reach it by train. Book a ticket from Copenhagen to Maribo S. via dsb.dk.

Lund 

Liberiet and the Cathedral in Lund are the natural starting points if you want to walk from Skåne to Vadstena. The easiest way to get there is by train. Book your ticket via SJ.se.

Jönköping 

In Jönköping, there are two good places to start your pilgrimage: Kristine Church or St. Francis Catholic Church.

Ödeshög 

For a weekend pilgrimage to Vadstena, the Swedish Church in Ödeshög is a good starting point. You can reach the Swedish Church in Ödeshög with Östgötatrafiken. Bus 677 operates between Linköping and Ödeshög.

EAST

Söderköping

The Birgitta Trail starts in Söderköping, which is approximately a week-long hike. Begin your journey at St. Laurentii Church. The easiest way to get to Söderköping is by bus from Norrköping or Linköping using Östgötatrafiken.

Linköping

 A four-day hike to Vadstena begins from Linköping Cathedral. The easiest way to reach Linköping is by train. Book your ticket via SJ.se.

Vårdnäs Diocesan Center

 From Vårdnäs Diocesan Center, it is almost exactly 100 km of pilgrimage. You can reach the Diocesan Center by taking bus 566. The bus stop is “Vårdnäs vägkors”. From there, it is a short 1 km walk to the Diocesan Center. Travel with Östgötatrafiken.
