The concept of pilgrimage has existed for a long time in nearly all cultures and religions. Pilgrimage is present in Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism, among others. Pilgrims often seek something sacred in their lives, aiming to deepen their relationship with themselves, others, and God. Some wish to reflect on the deeper values of life and perhaps make themselves open to spontaneous encounters in new contexts. One way they do this is by traveling to sacred places where they can be inspired by those who have journeyed before them.
The Meaning of Pilgrim
The term "pilgrim" derives from the concept of "stranger". When a pilgrim travels or walks, they are in unfamiliar territory, among unknown people. This fits well with the spiritual understanding that our earthly existence is temporary. At the same time, pilgrims find their way more deeply into themselves and their hearts. The essence of being a pilgrim is also well described on the Pilgrim i Sverige website.
